"Twenty some years ago, during the musical drought of the eighties, I drove into Nashville to see Jimmy Bowen, then head of MCA. He had produced one of my favorite records, Time Is On My Side, and I liked and respected him a lot. I told him I was thinking about making a country record. He said" I'll tell you what I told Delbert McClinton when he, Delbert, suggested doing the same thing. "Listen to country radio for two weeks and come back to me with a list of songs you heard on the radio that you would like to have done." I did and I couldn't.
Flash forward twenty years. I opened a folder in my computer titled "Songs I would like to do." Lo and behold, a great many of them were country tunes, some even from the eighties. Either I didn't try hard enough then or it took several decades to compile an appropriate list.
Well, here it is." - Tracy Nelson

"(You'll Never Be A) Stranger At My Door", Tracy's latest recording, is titled from a song that has been a staple of Tracy's live show for decades, and until now has always been referred to as "Screen Door". Fortunately, the recording of the song turned out to be a lot easier than finding the publishing information for a mis-remembered title and songwriter! There are 11 new tracks on this collection of country genre gems, recorded on December 13th and 14th, 2006, at Tone Chapparel Studio in Nashville (Madison, actually), the former home of singer Jim Reeves in the 1950's. As an homage, Tracy recorded Reeve's Country-politan hit "Four Walls" within his own!
The band for this record was based around a familiar cast of characters from records past ("Move On", "Ebony & Irony" ) including drummer John Gardner, bassist Byron House, and guitarist Bob Britt, as well as piano / accordianist (& jokester!) Steve Conn (guest accordian on "Ebony & Irony"), and multi-instrument wizard, 'Fats' Kaplin (who's skinny as a rail, btw!). Anchoring everything and making sure it all gets to disc (tape is a thing of the past...) was Tone Chap owner / engineer / brilliant-musician-in-his-own-right, George Bradfute (guest guitar on "Ebony & Irony").
Also making return visits to the studio with Tracy this time out were singers Vickie Carrico, Becky Russell, Alice Newman Vestal, (all wonderful recording artists in their own right!) and singer/songwriter Terry Tucker, who's also Tracy's long-time hair-dresser.
Finally, there's the storied legend, Guy Clark, whom Tracy asked to help (along with Alice) on her touching ode, "Salt Of the Earth", to the departed old-timers, & genuine characters, that once lived near her rural Tennessee home of 35 years. You can read more about the "Salt..." story HERE!

cats, and the glorious Tennessee countryside.
